Brasilia, born under the auspices of modern architecture, is considered a capital with the high potential to attract international tourists and to be the hub of international flights. In 2019, besides those already established with Portugal, the United States, Argentina and Panama, new direct flights to the capital have begun with Mexico, Chile, Peru and Paraguay, deepening tourism relations. Besides these new flights, the Stopover Program with a Portuguese airline holds the prospect of increasing the number of European tourists to about 20 thousand visitors annually.

Inaugurated on May 3, 1957 with the first commercial Pan American flight to New York, the Brasilia International Airport is today the third largest airport in the country in terms of international passengers. To guarantee the increase in tourist flow, the Brasilia President Juscelino Kubitscheck International Airport has become a key piece in leveraging Brasilia as a tourist destination. The airport has gone through several modifications: in 1994, it went through structural reforms; in 2012, six months before the Confederations Cup, a new expansion was begun, which allowed a historical record to be set on January 6, 2015 with 65 thousand passengers in one day; in March 2015, the air terminal was established to have the greatest capacity runway in the country – 60 flights per hour. The University of Brasilia – UnB, founded in 1962, is also a powerful internationalization instrument for the federal capital. With 51,162 regular students in 2018, UnB was considered the eighth best college education in Brazil and the fifth among the federal universities, according to the 2019 Times Higher Education (THE) ranking. The institution highlights itself by the high level of faculty qualification, as well as the extensive international research network strengthened by bilateral agreements for research and exchange development. In 2018, UnB had over 600 international students, most of which were Columbian, Peruvian, Argentine, Cuban, French and students born in the United States. Besides the title of World Heritage Site, Brasilia received, in 2017, the title of Creative City, making official its membership in the international network of the UNESCO 180 creative cities, those that invest in creativity as a strategic vector in sustainable urban development, strengthening local vocations, decentralizing and diversifying the economy and empowering innovation. With this title, Brasilia becomes part of the 8 city Brazilian network: Belém, Florianópolis and Paraty in gastronomy; Brasília and Curitiba in design; Salvador in music, Santos in movies and João Pessoa in art and pop culture.

The choice of Brazil as the host country for the 2014 World Cup was a great milestone to reaffirm Brasilia’s vocation as a host city for large sporting, cultural and business events. Since that time, about 60 large international events have been scheduled, to be held between 2014 and 2019. In relation to the tourism business, Brasilia held 3rd place and had an increase of 63% in international events in 2016, according to the International Congress and Convention Association – ICCA in 2015. Brasilia offers a diverse cultural and innovation program agenda. International, national and local events, held in the Plano Piloto and the other Administrative Regions, stimulate the city and provide the tone of the importance given to cultural diversity, exchange and internationalization.
